Ruth Mildred Johnson Barefoot

Benson, NC: Mrs. Ruth Mildred Johnson Barefoot, age 97, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM -Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Trinity Baptist Church in the Meadow Community. Rev. Thomas Collings will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.

Mrs. Barefoot was born on July 31, 1923 in the Meadow Community in Johnston County to the late George Rufus and Sophronia Morgan Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Ayden Barefoot; her daughter, Sophia Jane Barefoot Patterson. Mrs. Barefoot graduated from Meadow High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree from East Carolina Teacher’s College, and her Master’s of Education in Guidance from NC State University. Her teaching career spanned many years and included Suffolk High School, Benson High School, Four Oaks High School, Meadow High School and was a guidance counsellor at South Johnston High School where she retired in 1981. Mrs. Barefoot was as member of several professional organizations including, NCAE, NEA, and the NC Retired School Personal.
Mrs. Barefoot was instrumental in the Meadow Community by serving as the treasurer for the Meadow Ruritan Club and serving on the board of directors for the Benson History Museum and Benson Rescue Squad. She was a long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Women’s Mission Organization and several committees.
Surviving are her grandchildren, Lauren Patterson Jones, Chad Patterson; two great-grandchildren, Brody and Finn Jones; son-in-law, Charles H. Patterson, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 10:45AM Wednesday, June 2, 2021 prior to the service at Trinity Baptist Church.
