Garner, NC: Mr. Robert William “Bob” Cooney, age 86, of Breckenridge Drive passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at SECU Hospice House of Smithfield with his family by his side. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.

Mr. Cooney was born on April 24, 1940 in New London, Wisconsin to the late Charles Michael and Eleanor Schuh Cooney. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Denis Cooney. He was a proud Navy veteran who also served in the Army National Guard Air Force Reserves and later retired from the United States Postal Service. Throughout his life, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, a commitment to serving others, and a genuine willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed.

He had a love for working with his hands, especially carpentry, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including tractors, nature, and growing things. Whether he was working on a project, tending to the land, or helping someone in need, he found purpose in being useful and making a difference.

Above all, he was a genuinely kind and giving person. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it, never expecting recognition, repayment, or anything in return. His generosity came from the heart, and he gave freely of his time, talents, and kindness.

He will be remembered for his service to his country, his hardworking spirit, his love of the outdoors, and the quiet, meaningful ways he made life better for those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the things he built, the things he grew, and the countless acts of kindness he offered throughout his life.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Cooney; children, Michael Cooney and wife, Luz, Michele Hickmann and husband, Michael, and Marty Cooney and wife, Kelly; sisters, Sharon Butler and Sandra Lindow; brothers, Rev. Arthur Cooney and Rev. David Cooney; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and lifelong best friends, Martin and Snooky Young.
