Mrs. Holt was born on November 30, 1935, at Blackmon’s Crossroads in Johnston County, NC to the late Harvey Menson and Martha Massengill Lee. She graduated from Four Oaks High School in 1953 and married the love of her life, Walter Richard Holt, in 1956 at First Baptist Church Four Oaks, where she grew up. They started their married life in Raleigh, then moved to Goldsboro for three years as Walter advanced with National Cash Register (NCR). They moved to Hickory in 1967, where they raised their three daughters until moving back to Raleigh in 1982. While in Hickory (and while raising three school age daughters), Rebecca went back to school at Western Piedmont Community College where she earned her degree and became a registered nurse. She began her nursing career in the ICU at Glenn R. Frye Memorial Hospital, then transitioned to public health with Catawba Valley Public Health Department. In 1982, NCR took them back to Raleigh, closer to their eastern NC roots, where Rebecca worked for Wake County Public Health as a home visiting and school nurse. They lived in Raleigh for several years, then built a home in Clayton. In 1992 they built an almost identical home in Four Oaks on the same lot where she grew up. Rebecca retired from Wake County in 1999 – she loved being a nurse and loved public health. She inspired one daughter and one granddaughter to also become nurses.
Rebecca’s passions included her family, friends, and her faith. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a talented seamstress, teaching her daughters and anyone who had an interest. She enjoyed the lunch dates she shared with her high school classmates and donating books to Four Oaks Elementary School on behalf of her class. She was a great cook and always shared that gift with others, including the food teams at FBCFO. She played the piano and was an occasional pianist for her Sunday School class. She loved her WMU circle group and was a faithful visitor to shut-ins for many years. She served on the church history committee, helping to chronicle artifacts and assemble church history books. In the 125-year history of the church, she said “Walter and I have moved many times, and we always found a church wherever we went. However, I always considered First Baptist Church Four Oaks to be my home church. Now I am back home.” She and Walter went on several mission trips to Honduras together after Hurricane Mitch, and Rebecca cooked for the team members who were rebuilding houses and provided healthcare to locals on several trips. Rebecca and Walter also enjoyed traveling for pleasure and had the opportunity to visit many beautiful places together. One of their favorite places was their mountain home near West Jefferson, where they attended First Baptist Church West Jefferson and made wonderful friends with whom they spent Sunday night dinners at Shatley Springs, Tuesday night pizza nights, July 4th celebrations, and other gatherings whenever they were there. In 2019 they sold the Four Oaks house and West Jefferson house and moved to Lake Park Villas in Smithfield.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Holt Hughes and husband, Larry of Pinehurst, Katherine Holt Gallagher and husband, Mike of Cary, Janet Holt Burton and husband, Bob of Southern Pines; grandchildren, Josh Thomas, Courtney Turner and husband, Brandon, Lauren Hanchette and husband, Adam, Ryan Gallagher and wife, Kerri, Jordan Conoly, Kaitlin Kennedy and husband Kyle, great-grandchildren Bailee Thomas, Caroline Turner, Samuel Turner, Noah Turner, Grace Turner and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Rebecca is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Holt, in 2023. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brothers and sisters, Myrtle Lee Parrish, Margaret Lee Goodwin, Lois Lee Bowen, Harvey Menson Lee, Jr., Junius Russell Lee, Julius Haywood Lee, and Billy Sanford Lee.
Her family is grateful for the loving care she received in the 19 months she was at St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Four Oaks. P.O. Box 717, Four Oaks, NC 27524 or First Baptist Church of West Jefferson, 8 West 2nd Street, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
