Michael B. Jernigan

Smithfield, NC: Michael B. Jernigan, affectionately known as "Papa Mike," passed away on December 18,2025, at his home in Smithfield, North Carolina. Born on October 31, 1954, in Harnett, Michael spent much of his life in the Smithfield area, where he became a beloved figure in his community.

A visitation will be held in honor of Michael B. Jernigan on Saturday, December 27, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC . The Rev. Tim Inman will officiate the service. Burial will take place following the service at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson.

Michael was a devoted family man, cherished primarily for his unwavering love for his granddaughters, whom he adored more than anything in the world. He found immense joy in spending time with his family, often delighting in simple pleasures such as tinkering at home and enjoying fishing trips. Michael was well-known for his infectious smile and ability to make those around him laugh, embodying a spirit of warmth and kindness that was felt by all who knew him.

As a resident of Smithfield, Michael was regarded as the heart of his neighborhood. He lived most of his life beside his mother, Shirley until her passing. He was always the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, demonstrating a selfless and generous nature that endeared him to his friends and neighbors alike. His loving spirit and zest for life will continue to be a source of inspiration for his loved ones.

Michael is survived by his sons, Clinton Michael Jernigan and his wife Mary, and Bryan Chase Jernigan and his wife Mary. He also leaves behind four granddaughters, Ryan Elizabeth Jernigan, Ashley Nicole Jernigan, Reta Ann Jernigan, and Oaklee Jean Jernigan, as well as his brother, James Lee Jernigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie B. Jernigan and Shirley Lee Stephenson Jernigan, and his brother, Mitchell Bruce Jernigan.  Michael's legacy of love and laughter will not only be remembered but will live on through the wonderful memories shared by his family and friends.
