Angier, NC: Mrs. Joy Lane Byrd Barefoot, age 75, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM-8:00PM, Sunday, July 20, 2025 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC. Funeral Services will be 4:00PM-Monday, July 21, 2025 at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson, NC. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery in Angier, NC.
Mrs. Barefoot was born on July 12, 1950, to the late Willie Kiah “Buddy” and Euba McGee Byrd. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Bruce Byrd, and Reece Byrd. A graduate of Cleveland High School, and East Carolina University, Joy began her working career as a teacher. Following public school teaching, she worked as a teacher at Polk Youth Center in Raleigh, NC, a Superintendent with Raleigh Correctional Center for Women, and retired in the Administration Department. Upon retirement she received the Order of the Longleaf Pine. Joy lived up to her name “Joy”. She was a very fashionable lady, and enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, and was a true southern lady, who enjoyed an occasional margarita. Joy brought “Joy” to all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Larry Vinson Barefoot; son, Skylar Vinson Barefoot; granddaughter, Kenzie Lee Tart; brothers, Medwick Byrd, Sr., (Loretta), and Cronin Byrd, Sr., (Judy), sister, Wanda B. Duncan (Freddie); sisters-in-law, Linda Lunney, Carol Barefoot (Johnny), and Cathy Barefoot (Robert); many loving nieces and nephews, and her special dog, Buddy.
Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to The Harnett County SPCA, 1100 McKay Place, Lillington, NC 27546.
