It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Joseph L. Nuvolini, Jr., on September 1, 2026, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was 92.

Joe was born on April 22, 1934, in Cambridge, MA, to Joseph L. Nuvolini and Dixie Stringfellow. The family moved to New Rochelle, NY, where Joe grew up and developed his knack for making people laugh with his perfectly-timed jokes and wisecracks. He graduated from Iona Prep High School and then left for College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he polished his singing style and began his career in the Air Force as part of the school's ROTC program. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in economics and a commission in the Air Force. He served for 24 years as a fighter pilot and safety officer, and he was quite proud of his time as a Forward Air Controller in the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Air Force, Joe spent 26 years as a tax preparer at The Income Tax Center.

In 1963, Joe married his true love, Helen Sutton, of Raleigh, NC. Together, they had three children before Helen’s untimely death in 1975. He never remarried, choosing instead to surround himself with friends who treated him as family.

Joe was an early adopter of home computing and was a member of two local computer user groups, serving as president and webmaster for many years. He regularly attended COMDEX with friends and was an avid writer, penning a multitude of software reviews for technical magazines and newsletters.

Anyone who knew Joe also knew he was very proud of his Italian roots. What started as a discovery of his heritage on a trip to Italy quickly turned into an annual pilgrimage that lasted for the next 30 years. He made many Italian friends over the years, keeping in touch with them even after his travel days ended.

Singing was a life-long passion of Joe’s, and he was gifted with an amazing voice. He performed with several groups throughout the years, including Flipside and Vocal Fusion. But his most fulfilling time came after his move to MacKenzie Place where he joyfully entertained the residents with his beloved Frank Sinatra songs.

He was preceded in death by his older sister, Virginia Couture, of Quebec City, Canada, with whom he remained close throughout his life. His brother-in-law, Glenn Sutton of Raleigh, NC, remained Joe's true friend until the end. Glenn will miss Joe's daily morning phone calls.

He is survived by his three children, Marie (Matthew) Wolff of Portland, OR, Joe III (Veronica) Nuvolini of Clive, IA, and Robert Nuvolini of Banks, OR, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They will miss him dearly.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3122 Poinsetta Drive, Colorado Springs, CO, 80907, with a reception immediately following at MacKenzie Place, 1605 Elm Creek View, Colorado Springs, CO, 80907.

A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC, 27603.
