John “Dutch” Ward Detchemendy, age 67 of Benson, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

He was born August 14, 1958, in Nashville TN, a son of the late Francis J. & Bebe J. (Ward) Detchemendy.

Dutch was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 18 years, Nagisa. A proud father and step-father to John (Natalie) Detchemendy II, Nicole (Nathan) May, Denise Degnan, Laken (Matt) Detchemendy, Kelly Degnan, and Kent (Rachel) Degnan. And in what was possibly his favorite, and most beloved, role, “Pappy John” is survived by his ten grandchildren; Nicholas, Rae, Jody, Melanie, Julian, Joshua, Nolen, Ayden, Archie Ward, Rin, and one great granddaughter, Harper.

He is also survived by his siblings Mary Jean Detchemendy and Thomas (Kathy) Detchemendy; niece Kassie (Liam) Ulbricht, nephew Thomas Detchemendy, as well as countless friends and mentees who will miss him dearly.

Dutch was extraordinary man who acted like an ordinary one. Always there to offer wisdom, guidance, and a story made even better by his contagious laugh. His legacy of humor, perseverance, and compassion will be carried forward by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
