Coats, NC: Mr. James Laverne Matthews, age 86, of NC-27 passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be held-3:00 PM Sunday, November 8, 2026 at Rose and Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson. Officiating will be Rev. Michael Preddy. Mr. Matthews was born on November 5, 1939 in Harnett County to the late James Garland and Annie Lee Pollard Matthews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Matthews and brother, Kenneth Matthews. He proudly served his country as an Air Force veteran and went on to dedicate 42 years of hard work and service to Flowserve as a machinist before retiring. He found great joy in the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and was known for being a skilled shot, particularly with his trusty bean shooter. He enjoyed a little friendly competition and was tough to beat at cornhole and horseshoes. Above all, he was a family man who loved his family dearly. His love, laughter, stories, and the memories he created with those closest to him will be cherished forever. He will be remembered for his dedication, his many talents, his competitive spirit, and, most importantly, the love he had for his family.

Surviving includes his children, Gary Matthews and wife, Melissa and Cindy West and husband, Toby; grandchildren, Bryan Veliky and wife, Becca, Parish Carter and husband, Ryan, and Kaden Matthews; great granddaughter, Aubree Veliky; beloved dog, Allie Belle; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM prior to the service at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson.

The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers at this time.
