James Hoyt
Little
Feb 16, 1944 — Oct 9, 2026
James Hoyt Little, 82, passed away Friday, October 9, 2026, in the loving presence of his family, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, dedication, service, and devotion to those he loved. Born on February 16, 1944, in Wilson, North Carolina, James was the son of the late Oscar N. Little and Louise A. Little. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Janice L. Rollins.
James attended Selma High School before continuing his education at East Carolina University and later graduating from Atlantic Christian College. He devoted much of his life to education, serving as a teacher and coach for grades 7 through 12 at Pine Level and North Johnston schools. His passion for helping students extended beyond the classroom, as he taught GED programs at Johnston Community College and within the Johnston County Prison System. He also served as a teacher and coach in college preparatory programs associated with Johnston Community College and Campbell University. His commitment to education continued through his service on the Cape Fear Christian Academy School Board.
Following his career in education, James built a successful career in real estate. Alongside his beloved wife, Ann, he owned and operated James Little Real Estate for more than 40 years, with offices in Dunn and Smithfield. Through hard work, integrity, and a genuine care for others, he built lasting relationships throughout the community before retiring due to health concerns.
James was a lifelong student of history and possessed an extraordinary wealth of knowledge. He was an avid collector of Civil War magazines and amassed an extensive library of history books that reflected his deep love of reading and appreciation for the past. He also enjoyed working with plants and took great pride in cultivating an array of plants from cuttings, transforming his yard into a beautiful reflection of his patience and dedication. He enjoyed collecting model trains and listening to his vast collection of albums from the 1950s and 1960s. He was also a devoted fan of UNC basketball and could often be found cheering on the Tar Heels with enthusiasm and pride.
Above all, James loved his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle whose wisdom, guidance, strength, and unwavering love shaped the lives of those around him. Throughout his final days, he was in the loving care of his family and held in the comfort of God’s presence. His family finds peace in knowing that he is now at home with the Lord, free from pain and suffering.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Stewart Little; his daughters, Kelly Stone Thompson (Marcus) and Amanda Dayle Riggs (Vance); his cherished grandchildren, Taylor Thompson (Mikayla), Parker Thompson, and Camryn Aikin; his niece, Nan Rollins; and his dear furbaby, Tucker.
While our hearts are saddened by his passing, we find comfort in the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind. His kindness, knowledge, and steadfast love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Forever loved, forever remembered, forever missed.
