Forrest Craig Jones

June 7, 1951 — June 6, 2025

McGee's Crossroads, NC

With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Forrest Craig Jones, who was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 6, 2025, on the eve of his 74th birthday. A man of deep faith, boundless generosity, and infectious joy, he leaves behind a legacy that touched countless people and will continue to impact lives for years to come.

Craig was born on June 7, 1951, in Johnston County, NC, to his late parents Archie Mac Jones, Jr., and Marie Moss Jones. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, DeEtta Jones Wood.

Craig never met a stranger. His fun-loving spirit, warm smile, and kind heart could light up any room and made everyone feel like part of his family. He brought laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support to all who were blessed to know him, and he was a man of steadfast honesty and dependability. If Craig Jones said it, you could take it to the bank.

Throughout his life, Craig was devoted to serving both his community and his Lord. As a dedicated member of Friendship Baptist Church, he faithfully served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member, and he participated in many missions trips. Craig was a quiet leader in the community as well, dedicating his time and energy in a wide variety of capacities – from attending community fundraisers to serving on the board of the State Employees Credit Union and the County Board of Adjustment. His plate was so full that even his family was often unaware of all of his contributions to those around him! His impact on the church and the broader community is truly immeasurable.

Craig enjoyed a long and successful career as an engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he was respected for his integrity, work ethic, and leadership. Upon his retirement from the NCDOT, he had the honor of being awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the governor of North Carolina. He believed strongly in the value of hard work, an attitude that extended across all of his many professional roles: firefighter, pastor, engineer, school administrator, roofing business owner, licensed general contractor, and even tow truck driver and florist deliveryman. He also proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard.

Above all, Craig was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His greatest joy was the time he spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and even owned his own cruise agency. Special occasions sometimes found him dancing the shag with Gayle, the love of his life. His steady presence was the heart of every gathering; his love knew no bounds, and his selflessness was a shining example to everyone around him.

Though his absence leaves a tremendous void, his life was a beautiful testimony of compassion, laughter, faith, and service. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those he touched along the way.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gayle Wilkins Jones; his son, Forrest Spencer Jones, and wife, Heather; his son-in-law, Jeff Wood, and wife, Kasey; his grandchildren, Justin Wood, Mary Wood, Ava Wood, Archie Jones, Aaron Jones, and Andrew Jones; his brother, Mac Jones, and wife, Peggy; his sister, Denise J. Penny, and husband, Andy Mack; and countless other family members and dear friends.
