Dr. Burgess Pinckney Marshbanks

Dr. Burgess Pinckney Marshbanks left this life on July 25, 2025, in the arms of his three daughters, and arose to new life in the arms of God. He was 102 years old.

Born at home in Buie’s Creek, now Buies Creek, North Carolina to Lottie Marshbanks and Burgess P. Marshbanks, Sr., he grew up on the family farm near Campbell College, then a junior college, where his father was a professor and vice president. Burgess was a graduate of Campbell College, Wake Forest College, and Emory University’s School of Dentistry.

A World War II veteran, Burgess served as a dentist in the United States Army Air Corps’ 79th Fighter Squadron. After his service, he returned home to Buies Creek and established a dental practice in the nearby town of Lillington, where he worked until he retired. He was a life member of the North Carolina Dental Society and the American Dental Association.

Burgess and his wife Mary Jane were founding members of Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek. Both were involved in numerous church, civic, educational, and denominational boards and committees. Coming from a family that emphasized the importance of higher education and one with strong, accomplished women, Burgess told his daughters that they could achieve anything they wanted and not to let anyone tell them otherwise. Burgess and Mary Jane were supporters of Baptist Women in Ministry, Campbell University, Mars Hill University, and Friends of the Harnett County Library, among other organizations. Most of all, they were dedicated to serving God through their church.

Burgess was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, May Marshbanks, Mildred Johnson, and Nancy Bales; and most recently by his beloved wife, Mary Jane Marshbanks. He is survived by his three daughters, Lynn Marshbanks (David Kelley), Alice Marshbanks, and Ann Marie Benjamin (Adam), and ten grandchildren.
