Smithfield, NC: Ms. Dawn Marie Mitchell, age 46, of Smithfield passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at UNC Johnston Health of Smithfield surrounded by her loving family. A Memorial Service will be held-2:00 PM, Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Rose and Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Dawn was born on November 26, 1979 in Johnston County. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Helen Mitchell; fiancé, Jamie Massengill; nephew, Waylon Cole Register; aunt, Patricia Mitchell; and best friend, Danny Barefoot. Dawn was a loving mother, daughter and sister. She was caring and helped anyone she could. She loved to go to the beach to hunt seashells or look for dolphins. She was crafty and liked DIY projects or handmade gifts. She was a stubborn woman who let nothing get in her way. But love to spend time with friends and family. Her laugh would light up a room and could make anyone smile. To be loved by her was an honor.

Survivors included her children, Britney Mitchell and Brandon Massengill; father, Kenny Mitchell and wife, Louise; brother, Jeffrey Pilkington; nieces, Tabitha Register and husband, Tyler, Tiffany Holt, and Helena Pilkington; and many other nieces and nephews.
