I was fortunate to work with Carol for several years while she was at DFS. Since we traveled together weekly and worked in pretty small sections we got to know each other very well. Carol was a dear friend and co-worker. She touched my life in many ways and though we have not stayed in touch - I thought of her often. Extending my deepest sympathy for your loss.

I met Carol at choir at the Cary Alliance Church. She was always faithful to attend the practices and she so loved Jesus. In these past few years, Carol was in a great deal of pain - but she never complained, even if she was walking slowly and gingerly. She had this inner strength to everything she did. I will so miss seeing her example of love for God, others, and her focus and determination.

I have known Carol Gene forever as we were first cousins residing within a quarter mile of each other and a quarter mile from our grandparents, Ma'ma and Granddaddy. We celebrated holidays together; at Christmas time we waited breathlessly for Granddaddy to bring out the box of oranges and raisin to distribute. I guess we would be considered poor today but in reality we were rich. Our families made delicious hand-cranked homemade ice cream. We rode in the wagon pulled by the mules with Granddaddy to the watermelon patch to harvest melons for eating later or selling to some "City " people or just bursting one open in the field and enjoying it there. oftentimes we made false teeth out of the rinds. We spent hours in the cow pasture, now a shopping center, exploring through dangerous worlds and climbing and jumping on the huge sawdust piles. And we had pony cart rides with Uncle Felix. We spend hours playing sock ball in her front yard using the trees that still stand as bases. I celebrate her life and those fun, life shaping times. Professionally, inspired by her hard-working parents and grandparents, she excelled. Dear Carol Gene, we will all miss you and I am sorry that because of the current situation I could not travel to the services; hence, this tribute.

I have known Carol for approximately 38 years. I met her when I first went to work with the State as a secretary in DFS, License Section. She was one of the nurses I worked under typing reports. The 1st day I started she introduced herself and told me if I didnt understand or could not read her writing to just ask. Not a lot do that. We worked together really well and became good friends. She was the sweetest person you could ever meet. She worked hard and cared about everyone. I will miss her terribly and our get togethers. I am sure everyone that knew her will miss her great smiles and kind words. She was loved dearly. I know she is in a happy and loving place. My sympathy goes to the family and God Bless you all in this terrible time. Betty C. Perry

I worked with Carol as our consultant for Johnston County DSS Adult Home Specialist. She was a wonderful person and cared for others deeply. All the facilities and patients were in good hands under Carol's watch. I learned a lot form her and will never forget her. She was the best. My deepest sympathy to the family. Wendy Massengill
